FishNet is comprised of a consortium of institutions concerned with freshwater fish conservation. Freshwater fish are some of the most threatened species on earth, many confined to extremely tiny habitats and under extreme pressure from human use, climate change-induced drying, pollution and alien species introductions.
FishNet was established to help identify key hotspots and neglected species that would be lost without conservation interventions.
Our Greece projects
The FishNet Greece programme is led by Bristol Zoological Society together with partners in Greece from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. The work in Greece started with mapping the distribution of the Critically Endangered Corfu killifish and has developed to include a wider range of conservation interventions and expanded list of threatened freshwater fishes from Greece.
A successful conservation translocation, initiated in 2016, has resulted in establishing a secure population of the Critically Endangered Corfu killifish. Recent research using environmental DNA for monitoring cryptic freshwater fishes in complex habitats has now led to a less invasive and speedier monitoring programme for the species.
Brian is Director of Conservation and Science at Bristol Zoological Society and is Co-Chair of the IUCN Freshwater Fish Specialist Group. He is also the Chair of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria’s (EAZA) Freshwater Teleost Taxonomic Advisory Group and Chair of the EAZA Ex-situ Programme (EEP) Committee.
